This broadly refers to the stretch of beach between Thalpe next to Unawatuna Bay in the west and Weligama to the east. Of course Unawatuna is a beach at Galle too. It is in fact a suburb of Galle but is best treated separately. The coastline here is without doubt the most stunning in Sri Lanka. It would be true to say that the features that make the coastline so beautiful (rocky outcrops, near shore reefs etc), conspire to make sea swimming difficult in many places. Galle still bears the remnants of the island colonial past. The ramparts of the Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese and extensively fortified by the Dutch, is a true evidence of the grandeur of a past era. Today, Galle has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is unique for its natural beauty, sandy stretches of beaches and carpeted hills of tea in close proximity. You will explore Old Galle City including the Galle Fort.
